Cindy has a strong interest in helping people recover from emotional, mental, physical, and sexual abuse. Too often when someone experiences abuse they are blamed for their own situation, made to feel they are crazy, or told to get over it. She creates a warm supportive environment in which people can feel safe to tell their stories.
For some, it’s the first time they’ve ever really had a voice or spoken their truth about what they’ve endured. People with post-traumatic stress have nervous systems that are constantly on alert, prepared for the next negative event.
As a result, much of the work is focused on learning grounding and mindfulness exercises to be able to self-soothe and to prevent dissociation.
Cindy utilizes EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy to assist individuals in recovering from past trauma. EMDR helps people to become desensitized to past traumatic experiences so that they become distant memories with no real emotional impact. In addition, it helps them to develop healthier, more adaptive beliefs about themselves, decrease symptoms, and improve functioning.
